Our Vision
Inspired by the legacies of Dr. Joyce Piert, Dr. E. Hill DeLoney, Dr. Marian Wright Edelman and the Mississippi Freedom Summer of 1964, The FFSC is deeply committed to educational equity, community engagement, and collaborative progress. We believe programs serve as vehicles for change, and progress happens when solutions are driven by the people most impacted. The Flint Freedom Schools Collaborative is a consensus-driven, people-powered solution for closing educational gaps, fostering positive self-esteem, and nurturing the development and retention of youth, young adults, and professional talent throughout Flint, Genesee County, and the state of Michigan.
Our Mission
The Flint Freedom Schools Collaborative facilitates culturally relevant, literacy-focused programming, promotes equitable learning opportunities, and contributes to community-driven partnerships.

Our History
The Flint Freedom Schools Collaborative (FFSC) was born out of necessity, resilience, and an unwavering commitment to our community. In 2016, Bethel United Methodist Church, led by Rev. Faith Green Timmons, hosted the city’s first Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools summer site in response to the ongoing challenges faced by Flint families, exacerbated by the Flint Water Crisis. Two years later, the New Evolution Educational Center launched additional sites at Agape Church and Mt. Olive. In 2019, these efforts merged to form The Flint Freedom Schools Collaborative (FFSC), uniting resources, expertise, and a vision for closing educational gaps, fostering positive self-esteem, and nurturing the development and retention of youth, young adults, and professional talent throughout Flint, Genesee County, and the state of Michigan.
Our Values
At the core of our identity is a commitment to practice integrity, foster inclusivity, promote equity, and curate safe environments where all contributors feel seen, valued, challenged, and supported. We value:
