CDF Freedom Schools Summer Program

A transformative summer experience that builds strong readers, confident leaders, and empowered scholars through culturally rooted learning and community connection.

The CDF Freedom Schools Summer Program is a nationally recognized literacy and leadership initiative created by the Children’s Defense Fund. Designed for scholars in grades K–12, the program combines culturally responsive reading instruction, enrichment activities, and civic engagement to help young people develop a love for reading while strengthening their confidence, identity, and leadership skills.

At the Flint Freedom Schools Collaborative, scholars participate in a six-week summer program that blends literacy development with art, movement, social action, and community engagement.

Program Pillars

High Quality Academic Enrichment

Scholars participate in daily literacy activities that strengthen reading skills and build a love of books. Through engaging read-alouds, discussions, and hands-on activities, scholars connect literature to their own experiences. The day also includes enrichment such as arts, culture, STEM exploration, and physical activity.

Family Engagement & Involvement

Families are an important part of the Freedom Schools community. Throughout the summer, families are invited to participate as volunteers and invited to community events. Our team also connects families with resources and support when needed.

Civic Engagement & Social Action

Scholars learn that their voices matter. During the program, they explore issues affecting their communities and learn how to advocate for positive change. This learning culminates in the National Day of Social Action, where scholars share their ideas and raise awareness around an issue they care about.

Intergenerational Servant Leadership Development

Freedom Schools emphasizes leadership at every level. Scholars build confidence through teamwork, leadership activities, and public speaking. High school and college students also serve as mentors and program leaders, creating a strong intergenerational learning environment.

Nutrition, Health & Mental Health

Scholars receive nutritious meals and snacks each day to support healthy development. The program also incorporates physical activity, wellness practices, and supportive spaces that promote scholars’ emotional well-being.

Day in the Life of a Scholar

8:00 AM- 9:00 AM

Scholars start the day with a healthy breakfast, then transitions to gather for a high-energy morning celebration featuring a guest reader.

9:00 AM -12:00 PM

Scholars engage in interactive reading activities that strengthen literacy skills while exploring themes like leadership, conflict resolution, and social action.

12:00 PM – 1:00 PM

Scholars enjoy lunch together while relaxing and building friendships within the Freedom Schools community.

1:00PM – 3:00 PM

Scholars participate in enrichment activities such as arts, STEM, culture, physical activity, and workshops led by community partners.

3:00 PM

Scholars wrap up the day and depart. Our team meet to reflect on the day, share insights, and prepare to strengthen the next day’s scholar experience.

2026 Summer Enrollment

Program Dates: June 22nd -July 31st, 2026

The 2026 CDF Freedom Schools® Summer Program will run Monday through Friday and is open to scholars in Kindergarten - 12th grade.

Volunteer with Freedom Schools

Community members are invited to support the program by serving as Read Aloud guests, excursion chaperones, and program volunteers throughout the summer. Volunteers help create a welcoming learning environment for scholars and play an important role in strengthening our Freedom Schools community.
